Content ROI: Video & Live
How to measure ROI on individual videos and livestreams — organic vs paid, production cost attribution, and content lifecycle analysis.
The Problem
You produced 50 videos this month. Some went viral, some flopped. You ran 12 live sessions averaging 3 hours each. But you can't answer: which pieces of content actually generated profit? Views and engagement mean nothing if the orders they drive get eaten by fees, returns, and commissions.
TikTok Shop splits content performance across multiple APIs — Shop Analytics for organic video/live metrics, Ads API for paid promotion data. Without joining these, you're looking at half the picture.
Two Content Types, Two Data Sources
Short-Form Video
Videos generate orders through product links (orange basket). Performance data comes from:
- Shop Analytics API: Views, clicks, orders, GMV, conversion rate — per video, daily
- Ads Creative API: If promoted via GMV Max — ad spend, impressions, completion funnels (2s/6s/25%/50%/75%/100%), paid GMV
A video can have both organic and paid performance simultaneously. AxonRow merges these into a single content ROI view — total investment (production cost + ad spend) vs total return (organic GMV + paid GMV, minus all fees).
Livestreams
Live sessions are time-bounded events with real-time metrics. Data comes from:
- Live Analytics API: Per-session — viewers, peak concurrent, duration, orders, GMV, engagement
- Live Products API: Per-product within a session — which SKUs sold, in what order, with what conversion rate
- Ads Livestream API: If using LIVE GMV Max — session-level ad spend, paid viewers, paid GMV
- Per-minute data: Granular timeline of viewer count, orders, and GMV — see exactly when spikes happen
Calculating Content ROI
The Formula
For any piece of content (video or live session):
- Revenue: Total GMV generated (organic + paid)
- Costs: Production cost (if tracked) + Ad spend + Platform fees + Creator commission + Returns
- Net Profit: Revenue − all costs (from settlement data, not estimates)
- Content ROI: Net Profit ÷ Total Investment (production + ad spend)
The key insight: platform fees and returns are attributed per-order back to the content that generated them. A video that drove $10K GMV but had 30% returns and high commission rates might have negative ROI despite impressive top-line numbers.
Organic vs Paid Attribution
When a video has both organic reach and paid promotion:
- Organic GMV: Total video GMV minus paid GMV (reported by Ads API)
- Paid GMV: Directly from the Ads Creative report for that video
- Organic ROI: Organic net profit ÷ production cost only
- Paid ROI: Paid net profit ÷ (production cost allocation + ad spend)
This split tells you whether a video "works" on its own or only performs when you pay to push it. Content that's profitable organically is your highest-value asset.
Livestream-Specific Metrics
Per-Session P&L
Each live session gets its own profit breakdown:
- Session GMV: Total orders placed during the stream
- Session costs: Host fee/salary (amortized), ad spend (LIVE GMV Max), platform take, commissions
- Hourly rate: Net profit ÷ session duration — answers "is this host's time worth it?"
- Viewer value: Net profit ÷ unique viewers — your acquisition efficiency per eyeball
Product Sequencing
The Live Products API shows which SKUs sold at what point in the stream. Combined with per-minute viewer data, you can identify:
- Which products spike conversions (viewers → buyers)
- When viewer drop-off happens relative to product switches
- Optimal product order for future streams
Content Lifecycle
Videos on TikTok have a unique lifecycle — they can go viral days or weeks after posting. AxonRow tracks daily performance so you can see:
- Day 1-3: Initial push (algorithm testing)
- Day 4-14: Organic distribution phase
- Day 14+: Long-tail (search/recommended)
If a video is still generating profitable orders on day 30, it might be worth promoting. If it peaked on day 2 and flatlined, promoting it won't help — the algorithm already tested and deprioritized it.
What AxonRow Shows You
- Per-video and per-live session net profit (not just GMV)
- Organic vs paid split with separate ROI calculations
- Content ranking by actual profit contribution
- Live session timeline with per-minute revenue overlay
- Creator × Content matrix — which creators produce profitable content
The goal: stop measuring content by views. Measure it by profit.
