Settlement Lifecycle & Data Trust

Unsettled vs settled data, the 7-30 day settlement window, confidence levels, and how to read early profit estimates.

The Problem

You connect AxonRow on Monday. You see profit numbers for last week. Then on Thursday, those numbers change. By the following Monday, they've changed again. Why do the numbers keep moving?

This isn't a bug — it's how TikTok Shop settlement works. Understanding the lifecycle is essential for trusting your data and making decisions at the right time.

How TikTok Settlement Works

The Timeline

When a customer places an order, here's what happens financially:

  • Day 0: Order placed. You see GMV in Seller Center. No fee details yet.
  • Day 1-3: Order shipped and delivered. Return window opens.
  • Day 3-15: Return window (varies by market: 7-15 days). Customer can return for full refund.
  • Day 7-30: TikTok calculates final settlement — deducting all fees, commissions, adjustments, and confirmed returns.
  • Day 14-45: Settlement deposited to your bank account (varies by market and payout schedule).

The gap between Day 0 (order placed) and Day 7-30 (settlement finalized) is why your numbers change. During this window, TikTok is still calculating the final fees and waiting for the return window to close.

Two States of Data

AxonRow shows both states clearly:

  • Unsettled: Orders within the settlement window. We have estimated fees from the Finance API's "unsettled orders" endpoint — partial breakdown, subject to change.
  • Settled: Orders past the settlement window. Full 140+ field breakdown from the Finance API's statement transactions — final, won't change.

Both states live in the same table. The status field transitions from UNSETTLED to SETTLED as TikTok finalizes each transaction. When AxonRow refreshes your data daily, unsettled records get updated with the latest estimates until they're finalized.

Reading Unsettled Data

What You Get Early (Unsettled)

  • Order amount (GMV)
  • Estimated platform commission
  • Estimated affiliate commission
  • Estimated shipping fee
  • Partial fee breakdown (fewer categories than settled)

What Changes After Settlement

  • Returns confirmed and deducted
  • Final platform fees calculated (may differ from estimates by 1-5%)
  • Adjustments applied (disputes, chargebacks, promotional credits)
  • Full 140+ field fee breakdown available
  • Tax calculations finalized

Confidence Levels

AxonRow displays a confidence indicator on all time periods:

  • High confidence (settled): All orders in this period are fully settled. Numbers are final.
  • Medium confidence (mixed): Some orders settled, some still in window. Numbers will shift slightly.
  • Low confidence (mostly unsettled): Recent period — estimates only. Expect 5-15% variance from final.

In practice: data older than 30 days is almost always fully settled. Data from the last 7 days is mostly unsettled. The 7-30 day range is a mix.

T+1 Estimation

You don't want to wait 30 days to know if yesterday was profitable. AxonRow uses a T+1 estimation method that provides same-day profit estimates:

  • Historical settlement rates (what % of GMV was actually kept, by product category)
  • Known fee structures (platform commission rates are public and stable)
  • Return rate patterns (your historical return rate by SKU informs estimates)

As settlement data comes in over the following weeks, estimates are replaced with actuals. The estimation model improves over time as more of your historical data becomes settled — giving AxonRow a more accurate baseline for predicting unsettled periods.

When to Make Decisions

Safe to Decide on Unsettled Data

  • Broad trend direction (is profit trending up or down this week?)
  • Relative comparisons (Creator A vs Creator B — both equally unsettled)
  • Volume patterns (what's selling, regardless of exact margin)
  • Ad spend efficiency (ROAS direction, even if exact number will shift)

Wait for Settled Data

  • Final P&L for bookkeeping and tax reporting
  • Commission rate negotiations with creators (need exact contribution numbers)
  • SKU discontinuation decisions (need confirmed margin, not estimates)
  • Comparing this month's profit to last month's (ensure same settlement completeness)

First Week After Connecting

When you first connect AxonRow, here's what to expect:

  • Immediately: We pull your last 90 days of settlement data (most of which is already settled). You'll see high-confidence profit numbers for the last 2-3 months.
  • Day 1-7: Recent data (last 30 days) will show mixed confidence. New daily data starts flowing in as unsettled estimates.
  • Day 7-30: As your earlier unsettled data gets finalized by TikTok, confidence levels improve. The system calibrates its estimation model to your specific shop's patterns.
  • Day 30+: Steady state. You always have ~30 days of "mostly settled" + the current window of estimates. Variance between estimate and actual should be under 5% for most shops.

What AxonRow Shows You

  • Clear confidence badges on every time period (settled / mixed / estimated)
  • Side-by-side: current estimate vs what will likely be the final number
  • Settlement completeness percentage per date range
  • Historical accuracy of estimates (how close were last month's estimates to actuals?)

The goal: you always know how much to trust the number you're looking at. No dashboard should show you a profit figure without telling you whether it's an estimate or a fact.
